Visa | Guidance on Visa / RP (Resident Permit) Extension

To ensure compliance with Chinese regulations, international students must adhere to the following norms when applying for visa or residence permit extensions. The procedures and requirements vary slightly by location and institution, but the core guidelines are consistent:

1. Application Deadlines

General Deadline: Submit application up to 30 days before the expiration of the current visa/residence permit.

X2 Visa Holders: Must apply for an extension 7 days prior to expiry.

Overdue Applications: Failure to meet deadlines may result in penalties for illegal residence.

2. Required Documents

The following documents are typically required for extension applications:

Passport: Original and copies of the passport’s bio page, current visa/residence permit, and entry stamps.

Temporary Residence Registration: Issued by the local police station or dormitory office / International Students Affairs Office (within 24 hours of entry).

University Certification: A supporting letter from the institution (e.g. JW202/JW201 form, admission notice, or study confirmation) .

Medical Examination Report: Required for first-time residence permits, permits valid >1 year, or if the previous permit expired >3 months and a Letter of Commitment.

Proof of Financial Compliance: Tuition and insurance payment receipts (e.g., 800 RMB for insurance).

Application Form: Completed Foreigner Visa and Residence Permit Application Form with a recent 2-inch white-background photo and Appointment Letter and Visa/BP Approval Application Form.

3. Application Process

In-Person Submission: Applicants must visit the local Exit-Entry Administration Bureau in person.

University Coordination: Some institutions, require preliminary steps (e.g., tuition payment, insurance purchase, and email submissions) before scheduling appointments.

Processing Time: Typically 7 working days, though this may vary by location. Fees range from 400 RMB (≤1 year) to 800–1,000 RMB (>1 year) .

4. Special Considerations

Transfer Students: Must update registration with the new city’s Exit-Entry Bureau within 10 days of relocation.

Lost Passports: Report the loss immediately to local authorities and the embassy, then apply for a new residence permit.

Attendance Requirements: FIS-JJU mandates 50% attendance and passing grades for extensions.

Health Checks: Required for applicants aged 18–70 seeking permits >1 year or re-applying after a 3-month gap.

5. Penalties and Legal Reminders

Illegal Residence: Overstaying visas/residence permits may lead to fines, deportation, or entry bans.

Final Authority: Decisions by Exit-Entry Bureaus are final, including rejections or refusals to extend.

For institution-specific procedures (e.g., pandemic-related adjustments), consult International Students Affairs Office. Always verify requirements with local authorities to avoid discrepancies.
