Legal Guide for International Students in China
1. Visa & Residence:
You must register your residence with the police within 24 hours if you are not staying in a hotel.
Overstaying your visa is a serious offense, punishable by fines (up to 10,000 RMB) and/or detention.
2. Part-time Work & Internship:
Working illegally is strictly prohibited.
To work part-time or intern, you must have your school's approval and get a notation on your residence permit from the Exit-Entry Administration.
Illegal employment can result in heavy fines (5,000 - 20,000 RMB) and detention.
To work legally, first contact your university's International Student Office for guidance on the approval process.
3. Religion:
Religious activities are forbidden on school campuses.
You may participate in religious activities at officially recognized sites (temples, mosques, churches).
4. Insurance:
Having insurance is mandatory. Failure to purchase it can result in your enrollment being canceled.
5. Traffic Laws:
You must obtain a Chinese driving license to drive. Using a foreign or international license is not allowed without going through the proper conversion/application process.
Contact the local Vehicle Management Office (车管所) to inquire about the process for converting your license or obtaining a Chinese one.
6. Theft & Personal Conduct:
Theft (stealing), even of small items, can lead to a criminal record, fines, and deportation.
Misappropriating "found" property is also illegal.
Fighting, harassment, and other misconduct can lead to immediate expulsion and deportation.
