Special Invitation to Join the "Dragon Boat Festival at Wenbo Island" Cultural Experience
Dear International Students,
On behalf of the organizers, we are delighted to extend this special invitation to you to experience one of China's most cherished traditional festivals. International students are encouraged to join the "Joyful Jiujiang GO – Dragon Boat Festival at Wenbo Island" event.
About the Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwu Jie, is a time-honored Chinese holiday celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. For over 2,000 years, it has been a day to commemorate the ancient poet Qu Yuan, known for his patriotism and literary contributions. Traditions include eating zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings), racing dragon boats, and hanging herbs to ward off evil spirits. It is a vibrant celebration of community, heritage, and the spirit of summer.

To help us capture the wonderful memories and promote cultural exchange, we encourage all participating students to:
Write a reflection of at least 100 words (in English or Chinese) sharing your feelings about the event.
Submit one original photo taken during the event (group or individual).
For the reflection, we especially encourage you to compare and contrast this Chinese festival with traditional celebrations in your home country. Here are some interesting parallels to inspire your writing:
Southeast Asia (Cambodia, Laos, Thailand): The "Water Festival" features dragon boat races and floating lanterns, much like the Chinese dragon boat races. Both express gratitude to water and a spirit of community unity. The Cambodian "Pchum Ben" (Ancestors' Day) tradition of wrapping rice cakes is remarkably similar to making zongzi – both honor ancestors and connect families across generations.
Africa (e.g., Nigeria): The "Fishing Festival" – a vibrant community gathering celebrating the harvest of water resources.
India: The "Ganges Ritual" (water purification and blessing) and "Naga Panchami" (Snake Festival) – both demonstrate the significance of water and nature in spiritual purification and divine blessings.
Global Parallels: The tradition of coloring eggs during Easter shares a curious coincidence with the Chinese custom of "painting eggs and egg-tapping" during the Dragon Boat Festival – both reflect humanity's shared hope for life, fertility, and good fortune.
Your unique perspectives will help build a beautiful cross-cultural dialogue. All submitted reflections and photos will be used for event documentation and promotional purposes. This is also a great chance to have your voice heard and your culture represented!
Submission: After or even before the event, please send your reflection (100+ words) and original photo to email: fis@jju.edu.cn. As early as possible! Your words would be put on website or taken by the organizers.
